Choosing the right car rental company can make or break your trip. That is why you should do your research and carefully decide which company to pick. Here are some factors to keep in mind when booking a car rental company:

Booking

Fuel Policy

The best way to go about fuel for a rental car is the full-to-full policy. That means you collect the car with a full tank and return it full. This usually is easy enough to do since most rental car companies have plenty of gas stations nearby. An empty-to-empty policy is not ideal because then the first thing you have to do when you get your car is fill it up, and it can be tricky to return it empty. A full-to-empty policy is also not great because most companies charge a premium to fill it up.

On-site

Check to see if the rental office is in the area of the airport (on-site). It can be annoying waiting for a shuttle bus to take you to the rental office when all you want to do it is get out there and start exploring once you land. As well, having to set aside extra time to return it can also be a bother.

Child Seat Costs

If you require a child seat for your car rental, check how much extra it will cost you. Some companies charge for extra features like this at a premium, which can end up costing more than the seat itself depending on how long you are renting. You could bring your own car seat, as there are inflatable types that can be easily packed.

Satnav

A paper map can be tricky to follow in a foreign city and does not offer the same features as satellite navigation, like real-time traffic updates. Car companies usually charge extra for satnav, so you can save money by bringing your own. There are also apps available that allow you to download a map for free so you can use it even without data.

Pick Up

When picking up your car, check for any damage and mark it on the agreement – even if it is minor. Check that there is a spare tire that is inflated. Remember to take relevant pictures of the vehicle, including any damage, its mileage, fuel gauge, etc. And, check your credit card statement once you get home to make sure you did not get charged extra.

Drive Safely

Before you head out, get familiar with all the features of the car such as how to turn the wipers and lights on. Do not expect other drivers to be as careful as you are on the road and drive accordingly. It is enough of a hassle dealing with an accident on home turf let alone when you are far away from home. Remember to put fuel back in the car before returning it and which side of the road you are meant to drive on.
