If you are heading out on a road trip, then there are a lot of things that you need to pack to make sure that it is a successful one. You need to plan out how long you will be gone, what activities you will be doing, and where you will be staying. The last thing you want to do is forget something, but you also don’t want to overpack and end up lugging around too much stuff or not having enough room in your car. Here is a comprehensive packing list from your friends at Access Rent a Car.

When you are taking a road trip you will want to bring three different bags along with you:

  • Duffle bags
  • Insulated Totes
  • Backpacks with hydration bladders

You want to use duffle bags to pack all of your things. This is because soft bags are easier to stuff into your trunk and you do not have to worry about the contents of your bag being damaged like you would if you were sending a duffle bag through airport security.

An insulated tote is perfect for picnicking and doubling as an ice chest in a pinch. It can also be folded up so that you don’t have to worry about it taking up a ton of space as an ice chest would.

If you are going to be doing any kind of exploring or hiking, then you need to have a backpack with a hydration bladder, preferably with a 3-litre capacity. This is the perfect size to take on any trip and will serve you well.

Clothes

Going on road trips are a bit different than going on a beach vacation or touring the globe. Go over your itinerary before you go. If you are going to go to any high-end restaurants or events on the way, then you will want to pack clothing for that event carefully. Otherwise, you will want comfortable and breathable clothing, hiking clothes, swimwear, and undergarments. Darker colours are recommended as they hide stains better. You also need a raincoat and at least one sweater.

On top of clothes, you need to bring a drawstring laundry bag for dirty clothes so that you can do your laundry at laundromats.

Snacks

While you may not be able to pack snacks for the entirety of your trip, depending on how far you will be going, it is cheaper to get snacks from home or the grocery store than to buy them at gas stations.

While it can be tempting to bring nothing but treats, it is a good idea to bring healthy options with you. Veggies are excellent, as is freeze-dried fruit. Trail mix and granola bars are also an important thing to bring along as they are filling, are easily contained, and do not spoil.

Camera

Make sure that you bring your camera, spare batteries, and chargers. If you rely on your phone to take pictures, then consider smartphone camera accessories to get even better shots!
