If you smell gas in your car, there is a very high chance that you have a gas leak and you must look at all of the possible causes to figure out why this is happening.
Always start by taking a look at your gas cap. While it may sound silly, one of the most common reasons why a person starts to smell gas coming from their vehicle is because they did not properly lock the gas cap into place after refuelling. If your cap is not secure, it will allow the gas to escape. Even if your cap is only partially secured, it will still lead to gas fumes which you will be able to smell. Another aspect you need to look for is a crack or some sort of damage to your gas cap which can occur over time. If that’s the case it won’t be able to do its job properly. So, the next time you smell gas in your car, take a look at your gas cap to see if it’s loose, faulty or missing altogether.
If your gas cap is fine, you should then check for punctures in your fuel tank. If you see something there it’s normal because wear and tear will affect its condition over time and even the slightest degradation can lead to a gas leak. You may encounter an issue with the vent hose which can convert unburned gas into vapour causing a very harsh and strong gas odour.
Next, check your fuel line which is made of rubber and can dry out or crack over time. When that happens, a gas leak can occur and your vehicle will start to smell like gas. The fuel line connects the engine and the fuel tank, so inspect it thoroughly to see if you can detect any cracks on its exterior.
An oil cap is another aspect you need to check because if it’s broken or damaged, it will allow gas fumes to escape from the engine. The gas fumes will enter through the car’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and will mix with the air coming from these components making your car smell strongly of gas. Check the condition of your oil cap to make sure this is not the case.
You can try checking some of these aspects yourself and if it’s something more serious that you’re not comfortable with, a professional mechanic may be a better answer.
